More Winter, then? Update 11/15/18

Wilder Performance

Our early start to winter has got us pumped! It’s great to see that November has been colder and snowier than expected, after an up-and-down start to the month.

With snow cover spreading across North America faster than climatology, things are looking good:

This development, along with several other factors I have looked at, is getting me bullish on the idea of a good winter around here. But as always, the demons will be in the details for each particular event as we move forward.

After Thanksgiving?

A strong trough is forecast to crash into the western United States by the middle of next week and kick the jet-stream into a zonal flow across the United States:

This would attempt to send a mild surge toward us after Thanksgiving.  There has been much worry that the final week of November will wipe out our early bounty.

But I’m not so sure that’ll end up being the case for ilsnow land.  The GEFS Ensembles are showing something interesting for the end of November:

There may be a split flow and undercutting southern jet-stream. This could allow for suppressed southern storm tracks, as opposed to having every storm rolling through the Midwestern states and blow-torching us.

I certainly wouldn’t rule out a miserable rain event before the end November, but this set-up may not totally stink either.

Wanna ride? Caution!

I know it’s tempting to truck your snowmobile up here and take it for a spin in Perkins Clearing, Powley Road or Moose River Plains with the unseasonably deep mid-November snow pack.

But snowmobiling season does not begin until the conclusion of big game hunting season at sundown Sunday, December 2, 2018 for Hamilton and northern Herkimer Counties. There is no extended muzzleloader or bowhunting season here:

In addition to the State regulations, municipalities and snowmobile clubs determine when they open their trails.

So…

If you have access to private property in which you have permission to ride your snowmobile, you can give that a shot.

Otherwise: Let’s be patient and respect the hunters’ season. We’ll have December, January, February and March to have our fun.

Don’t even ask me if the lakes are safe to ride…

For the ilsnow nation,

Darrin
