There is a major hazard on the river trail leading to the Tree Farm on trail C4 just past HM100. A few sleds went for a swim in the creek this weekend and many folks are crossing over to the XC trail. There are two large stringers that are just above the snow and if you hit them your sled will be damaged and you will get hurt. We have been talking to the town regarding this trail and we hope to have a solution soon. The Town will go in today to look at the situation and hopefully provide a quick fix.

I will post additional pics on the DRAG facebook page soon so everyone can understand the problem.

The town of LP has taped off the hazard and they are working hard on a solution to the situation.

Stay tuned.

The ice in and around the river trail is very thin and the Town of LP has closed Trail C4 from HM100 to HM117 for safety reasons. To get from HM117 on trail C4 to Speculator use Trail S41 to S41C to HM109. From there you can use Trail C4 to access the Village.

Hopefully w/ cold weather or a re-route, the trail can be open soon.

Thanks

Bob C.

A groomer was broken down behind the tennis courts on tuesday. I noticed it from a distance figured it was a town groomer.

Well you've got the cold weather at least thru this weekend, this should solidify anything that wasn't frozen before this.

It will help however river ice is never really safe and the creeks along the trail are the last to freeze and the 1st to thaw. Running water, changing levels and organic muck make this ice weak. I have broken through 8+ inches of ice w/ the BR-110.

As per club policy, D.R.A.G. will not groom the river trail w/ the track groomers. We will only use the skandics for this trail. Hopefully we can find a re-route to the tree farm that is safe and does not use the river trail.

For a short term solution the town of LP will be looking into improving trail LP4A between the Village and the Tree Farm. This trail runs along Rt 30 and Downey Ave and then connects to Old Rt 8 by Burnham Mill Bridge.

For a long term solution we will look into possible trails that connect the woods section of the river trail to the Village. Most likely this will include the use of state lands which will only delay the process.

Stay tuned

I'm not familiar with LP4A. Is there a lot of ditch-bangin and guardrails?

Yes, not a great trail but the town is looking into improving it. It is similar to the trail along Rt 30 between Wells and the Tree Farm. I rode it last weekend and it was OK. It will give folks a second way to get from the Tree Farm to Speculator Village.

Lots of guardrails and side slopes. How can they make it groomable? Build bridges over the ditches and put the trail at the bottom of the highway slope?

LP4A is one of my favorite trails. There are a couple route options on the northern part. I choose the one that does not require riding on Downey Ave.

LP4A is not bad once it gets packed and ridden, as long as there is not a big thaw with rain. The main problem is that there is some "ditch-banging" and if there is too much melt or rain runoff then you really get ditches.

Side slope is somewhat of a problem but not as bad as you might think. If there is enough snow and it is properly packed some of the side slope can be eliminated and/or avoided by strategic choice of where you ride. There are a couple of bridges down low that help you avoid side slope or snowbank riding. There are a couple other places where bridges or "wet hole covers" could be put to make is safer to ride low instead of up on the snowbank or side slope. One of the reasons for riding the snowbanks instead of down low is that it's "better safe than sorry" to stay up high rather than risk getting stuck low down in a drainage area that might be hollow underneath the snow or actually have water at the bottom. In some cases there actually are bridges but it's a pretty good grade down and up to/from them and when there's lots of snow it's hard to see exactly where they are so it look bad.

I can't see taking a big tracked groomer through there but I think it could be done with Skandics once the trail was packed and side slope minimized.

It's too bad the tracked ATV with drag concept seems to be in no man's land because that really worked well. The only problem with it from an operational standpoint was that it was cold to ride compared to a Skandic, but that could have been improved with a windshield and heated grips.

I'm trying to look at the bright side but honestly this seems like mossy vly kinda deal all over again. I agree the river trail is a pain but its worked for many years so can't minor fixes for now keep it open ? I feel like since the town, and state were mentioned this will be closed with no fix for five years.. maybe I'm just pessimistic because of areas like mossy vly and the past history though..

When it comes to any snowmobile trail construction, improvement, or reroute issue in the Adirondacks, the state (APA/DEC) is usually the problem even if the local forester is agreeable.

The fact is that the environmentalists are a more organized, better funded, more vocal group advocating for environmental "protection" and closure of more land to snowmobiles.

What every snowmobiler can do is contact your state representatives and the governor and advocate for more flexibility with respect to snowmobile trails and state your opposition to the closure of any trail. This does not have to be about this trail specifically. We don't even know what if any state or easement land would be used.

You could also compare the relative freedom that the hiking groups have to do trail building/rebuilding compared to the restrictions on snowmobile volunteers. I am thinking about the new Gilmantown trail here. From what I have been told the trail is all laid out and almost ready to go but it is not open due to lack of manpower to build bridges, etc. But actually not be the lack of volunteer manpower, but rather the fact that the volunteers are not allowed to do anything without direct DEC supervision.
